Kia to enter compact SUV segment with new Stonic crossover

Kia will enter the compact SUV market with a new B-segment crossover called ‘Stonic’, a name it says is a combination of speedy and tonic “which refers to the first and last note on the musical scale”.

The new city crossover will slot below the company’s strong selling Sportage mid-size SUV and rival the Toyota C-HR / Mazda CX-3 / Honda HR-V establishment in one of the fastest growing passenger car markets.

Along with the announcement are several sketches of the upcoming crossover, showcasing its striking, European flair design which Kia says is inspired by the form and function of larger Kia SUVs.

Inheriting design elements from the Sportage and Stinger, the Stonic concept features a sweeping roofline, beefy bumpers and exaggerated wheel arches housing oversized wheels typical of sketches of this kind.

Kia says the car blends sharp horizontal feature lines with softer sculpted surfaces, and brings compact dimensions and a low centre of gravity to the class. A uniquely designed roof rack add “a sporty look to the vehicle” while unique tail lamp graphics amplify Stonic’s “young and futuristic appearance”.

The European-designed cabin echoes the appearance of the exterior, with straight lines, smooth surfaces and geometric design forms. According to the South Korean car maker, the Stonic’s interior places technology and ergonomics at its heart, with smart packaging maximising space for all occupants, and a ‘floating’ centre infotainment screen seamlessly blending smartphone access with the car’s many functions.

The Stonic goes on sale in the second half of 2017, though Kia Australia has not confirmed whether the Stonic will be sold here.
