The fourth-generation Subaru WRX has launched in Australia. Available as a sedan only, the all-new WRX is priced from $38,990 for the entry-level model – $1,000 cheaper than the equivalent outgoing model.
Powering the new all-wheel drive WRX is a 2.0-litre Horizontally-Opposed FA-Series Direct Injection turbocharged Boxer engine. It produces 197kW at 5,600rpm and 350Nm of torque between 2,400-5,200rpm and features Dual Active Valve Control System and a twin-scroll turbocharger. It will send the WRX into triple digits in 6.0 seconds
The new engine is said to be 11.5 per cent more fuel-efficient and produces 13.8 per cent less CO2 compared to the superseded 2.5-litre unit. Its turbo is mounted directly under the engine and comes with a lighter weight exhaust system.
To achieve a better exhaust note, engineers have abolished a cylinder chamber and shortened the inside pipe. The new WRX also comes with an electric power steering with a quicker steering ratio of 14.5:1, while the gearbox mount bushings are 230 per cent stiffer
For the first time, the new WRX comes with Active Torque Vectoring that applies brake to the inner front wheel and distributes torque to the outer front wheel, producing more neutral handling.
Also for the first time, the WRX will feature Subaru’s Sport Lineartronic Continously Variable Transmission while the manual gearbox will lift its gear count to six.
All WRX features LED headlights, with light distribution increased by 35 per cent over the old model. LED daytime running lights, LED rear lights and LED indicator lights integrated into the side mirror are also standard.
Inside, the roomier interior introduces soft-touch surfaces while cargo capacity has improved by 40 litres to 460 litres. All models feature Bluetooth with audio streaming, climate control air conditioning, cruise control, 3.5-inch Multi-information Display, sports front seats with red stitching and a 4.3-inch LCD Display.
Premium models add a Harman kardon sound system with Fujitsu Ten head unit, electric sunroof, powered driver’s seat, keyless entry with push button start and satellite navigation.
