2013 Volkswagen Golf Mk7 GTD uncovered

Volkswagen has uncovered the Mk7 Golf GTI’s diesel brother, the Golf GTD. It will officially bow in at next month’s Geneva Motor Show.

The range-topping diesel Golf comes with a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder transversely mounted common rail engine producing 135kW (181hp) at 3,500 rpm and 379Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque between 1,750 and 3,250 rpm.

Power is up 10kW (13hp) on the outgoing Mk6 Golf GTD, while torque has increased by 29Nm (22 lb-ft). Power is transferred to the front wheels via a standard 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed dual-clutch DSG gearbox.

The Mk7 Golf GTD will dash from 0 – 100km/h in 7.5 seconds, six-tenth quicker than its predecessor. Top speed is 230km/h (143mph), that 8km/h quicker than the Mk6.

Fuel economy is rated at 4.1L/100km while CO2 emissions of 139 g/km. Due to various weight saving measures, the new Golf GTD tips the scales at 1,302kg, which is around 60kg lighter.

Visually, the Golf GTD shares the same basic styling as the Golf GTI, much like the current generation. Where the GTI sports a red theme, the GTD features grey theme.

There’s a prominent rear roof spoiler, wider sills, chrome tailpipe and a diffuser. The Golf GTD wears 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 225/45 tyres and rides on a sports suspension.

Inside, the trademark tartan cloth seats remain, again in grey. The sporty theme continues with stainless steel pedals, a sports steering wheel and black headlining.

The 2013 Volkswagen Golf Mk GTD is expected to arrive in Australia either late this year or early 2014. We will bring you more details when the GTD is officially revealed at next month’s Geneva Motor Show.
