Fans of hot wagon may have something to look forward to as it appears that Volkswagen is preparing a Golf R Wagon! While nothing is official, a prototype of a Golf Wagon wearing Golf R bumpers and wheels, has been caught pounding the Nürburgring.

It could be the ultimate sports machine for those wanting hot hatch performance but with the practicality of a 605 litres boot capacity.

Like the Golf R hatchback, the wagon is likely to share its all-wheel drive underpinnings and 220kW (detuned to 206kW for Australia) 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The hatch is capable of blasting itself from 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds when paired with a DSG transmission. With the weight penalty of a wagon, expect the load hauler to be slightly slower.
