Nissan has officially taken the wraps off the 2014 Nissan Qashqai. The car will replace the popular Dualis SUV in Australia when it goes on sale next year. It rides on Renault-Nissan’s new Common Module Family (CMF) platform and is up to 40kg lighter than its predecessor. The SUV is 49mm longer than the current model and fractionally lower and wider.

Nissan’s designers seemed to have taken inspiration from the Hyundai Santa Fe for the Qashqai, especially in rear three-quarter view. The new SUV looks decidedly more upmarket than the current offering, with a distinctive clamshell bonnet, slightly edgier design and a sloping roofline. Diesel models with manual transmissions also sport an Active Grille Shutter that automatically closes the grille at speeds above 30km/h (18 mph).

Inside, the cabin receives the same classy treatment with a cleaner design. Highlights include gloss black trim, metallic accents and ‘zero gravity’ seats that Nissan said offer more comfort and support. A 7-inch touch screen NissanConnect infotainment system with internet connectivity is also on offer.

Under the bonnet, a quartet of engines are available, they include:

  • A 85kW/190Nm 1.2-litre direct-injected turbocharged 4-cylinder
  • A 110kW/240Nm 1.6-litre direct-injected turbocharged 4-cylinder
  • A 81kW 1.5-litre 4-cylinder diesel
  • A 96kW 1.6-litre 4-cylinder diesel

They are mated to manual transmissions that drive the front wheels. An Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission and ALL-MODE 4×4-i system are optionally available. The Qashqai has an improved suspension and a new Electronic Power Assisted Steering system that Nissan promises to deliver a “more natural driving experience”.

Local pricing and specifications will be announced closer to launch next year.
