Subaru’s Next New WRX To Evolve Separately From Impreza

Since Subaru’s revelation that the next WRX will take a separate evolutionary path to the standard Impreza at the New York Motor Show in April earlier this year, we are gaining more details on the company’s high-performance model.

Subaru’s legendary WRX has been a highly tweaked version of the Impreza since 1992. However, that meant working around the constraints of the basic car.

That will change in the next-generation WRX. Our image shows an artist’s impression of the car, as a two-door with heavy-duty bodywork. Every part of the car will be bespoke, from the engine to the body. The new ‘Rex’, as it is affectionately known by car enthusiasts around the world, will embody the necessary credentials of a proper sports car.

It will be developed from the ground up to win in motorsport. Powered by a new 200bhp (149kW) 1.6-litre turbocharged boxer engine driving all four wheels, Subaru’s engineers has worked hard to trim weight from the car. It also sits on a shorter wheel-base to give faster and more precise turn-in. Perhaps Subaru is planning a return to the World Rally Championship which they pulled out in 2008.

As with previous generations, the new WRX will also spawn a low-volume flagship STi, which will be more hardcore than ever. Subaru is able to push the envelope further with this car as its forthcoming coupé, co-developed with parent Toyota, will fill the gap for a more forgiving performance model.

With the change in direction, the next WRX will also drop Impreza from its name, it will be known as the Subaru WRX instead. Expect the car to be unveiled next year.
