Our friends with the long lense have caught the first spy photos of the 2018 Mercedes-Benz A-Class frolicking out in the open.

Wrapped in heavy camouflage, the next-generation baby Merc will retain the current hatchback’s proportions but refreshed with important updates to see off rivals such as the Audi A3, Lexus CT and BMW 1 Series.

While looking instantly familiar, a closer inspection of the A177-series prototype reveals a markedly longer wheelbase and rear doors, suggesting better rear legroom and luggage capacity – a bugbear of the current model.

The car’s wing mirrors have also migrated from the window frame down to the door for better forward visibility.

Inside, we can expect the next-generation A-Class to gain higher quality materials while the awkward stand-alone central screen will be better integrated into the dashboard.

Like its styling, the 2018 model will be based on a heavily revised version of the current MFA modular front-wheel drive platform, with improved rigidity but also lighter.

We can expect better efficiency from a range of downsized turbocharged engines mated with dual-clutch transmissions. The highly popular A45 AMG will also be making a return to fight with the Audi RS3 Sportback.

If you have spy pics of your own, we’d love to see them. Email them to admin@forcegt.com.au
