Sharp developing Free-Form instrument display

Sharp Free-Form instrument display

Japanese technology company, Sharp is set to revolutionise the humble car instruments. It has announced that its engineers are developing what it calls a Free-Form Display.

Unlike conventional displays which are rectangular because they require a minimal width for the bezel in order to accommodate the drive circuit, called the gate driver, around the perimeter of the screen’s display area, Sharp’s Free-Form Display does not require such a driver.

The result is a display that could take on any shape or form without affecting quality, viewing angle and brightness.

This means that in the future, designers are not constrained by the rectangular shape and is able to fit a display wherever they fancy.
