Sexy New 2013 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Convertible

General Motors has unleashed its most powerful convertible to date, the all new 2013 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Convertible.

The new soft-top is a development of the highly successful Camaro ZL1 Coupé, with which it shares many parts. The main act of the car is non other than GM’s 6.2-litre supercharged LSA V8 engine, producing 580hp (432kW) and 556 lb.-ft of peak torque (754Nm).

According to the General, that’s enough power “to exceed the output of 2+2 convertibles of many performance icons such as the Porsche 911 Turbo with 530hp and the Aston Martin DB9 with 470hp”.

Chief Engineer for the Camaro, Al Oppenheiser had the following to say when interviewed recently: “The Camaro ZL1 convertible will be one of the most powerful and most capable convertibles available at any price.” He continues: “this is a car that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face every time you drop the top, or hit the gas.”

As with most convertibles, the topless Camaro has been reinforced, in this case with tower-to-tower bracing under the bonnet. A transmission support reinforcement brace, an under body tunnel brace, a front “X” brace, stiffer cradle and a rear under body “V” braces complete the body strengthening.

Noise and vibration have also been reduced, thanks to additional structural reinforcements. These include a hydro-foamed tube in the A-pillars, an inner reinforcement bracket in the windshield header, a reinforced front hinge pillar and reinforcements inside the rockers.

Like most high-end GM products, and the Camaro ZL1 Coupé, the Convertible is equipped with GM’s 3rd generation Magnetic Ride suspension and a Performance Traction Management System.

Visually, the new Convertible has a redesigned body kit that includes a massive vented hood scoop, new front and rear bumpers.

The car will make its public debut at the LA Auto Show in November.
