Next-generation Bugatti Veyron In Development

The successor to the most mental car on the planet, the mighty 431km/h Bugatti Veyron, is under development.

Bugatti Chief Vehicle Engineer, Jens Schulenburg, told UK magazine, Auto Express, that work has already begun on a Veyron successor. He candidly revealed some of the challenges the company’s engineers face with the new model:

“The big challenge on the next car will be reducing weight – we are looking at some incredible technologies, such as wheels made entirely from carbon fibre. Hybrids are definitely something we’re looking at, too.”

Putting a Hybrid engine in a supercar is becoming more common as companies strive to improve overall fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Being part of the Volkswagen group, Bugatti certainly has access to the company’s vast pool of hybrid technical knowhow.

The engineers’ main brief is, of course, speed. The current car produces in excess of 736kW (1000PS) of power and holds the record as the fast production car in the world. With the addition of electric propulsion, the new Veyron may yet set another record for top speed.

It is too early to speculate on what sort of engine Bugatti has in store, nor have they revealed anything, but the one thing we can be certain of is the new Veyron will be more powerful and drinks less.
