Here’s proof that the next-generation Toyota Camry is just around the corner. Spotted testing on public roads in America the Camry prototype was draped in full camouflage, but some crucial details were still visible.

The front fascia appears to have been completely redesigned, with sharper wraparound headlights flanking a wider front grille. The new bumper also looks to be punctured with larger air intakes.

Down the side, a more prominent shoulder line joins the front and rear wheel arches, while the lower side skirt gives the mid-size sedan a sportier stance.

Slenderer taillights, a bootlid spoiler and a chunky rear bumper highlight the rear makeover.

Surprised by all those sporty touches on a Camry? So are we. And we are led to believe we could be looking at a high performance version of the new Camry, the first for the nameplate.

There are more positive hints, too, such as those quad exhaust tips, rear fender air breathers, lowered ride height and sport rims.

The first all-new Camry in six years also appears to have a sleeker roofline with a heavily raked rear windscreen.

It will adopt the new generation platform called Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) and the high performance model is likely to sport a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. In a Camry!

The new Toyota Camry is expected to debut in late 2017.
