The next generation Lexus CT will branch into two directions and offered as both a hatchback and a sub-compact crossover, according to the latest issue of Japanese publication Best Car.

While the new CT will be a direct replacement for the current model, the spawned crossover will be a new addition to the rapidly expanding Lexus line-up.

Slotting below the highly successful Lexus NX crossover, the new CT-based sub-compact SUV will offer a higher ride height with plastic fender panels and roof racks. If the speculation is true, the smallest Lexus crossover will rival the likes of Mercedes-Benz GLA and the soon-to-arrive Audi Q2.

Best Car reports that the powertrain line-up for the CT hatch/crossover range will include a Prius-sourced 1.8-litre petrol-electric hybrid power unit and a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine currently offered in other Lexus models.

It’s expected that the CT hatch will be front-wheel drive-only, while the CT SUV will be available in both front- and all-wheel drive. In AWD models, the rear wheels will be solely driven by electric power, similar to the NX setup.

Lexus has recently trademarked the UX nameplate in North America, Europe and Australia. Could the new moniker be name for this rumored new model?
