Mitsubishi has unveiled the Outlander PHEV Concept-S ahead of its debut at the upcoming Paris Motor Show next month. The first official photos of the concept came after a teaser was released by the company earlier this month.

Based on the production Outlander PHEV, the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV, the Concept-S takes the design of the road-going car one step further by adopting a sporty and sophisticated design theme. The exterior and and interior styling is intended to reflect the Outlander PHEV’s on-road agility and its unique twin motor four-wheel drive setup and plug-in hybrid EV systems.

The concept carries over the drivetrain of the Outlander PHEV production model. It consists of twin 60kW electric motors front and rear, a 12kWh lithium ion drive battery, 70kW output generator, lightweight front transaxle assembly and a 87kW/186Nm 2.0 litre four-cylinder MIVEC petrol engine to significantly extend PHEV’s driving range when the batteries run out of juice.

According to the Japanese marque, the show car is a proposed special package of the Outlander PHEV production model complete with individual interior and exterior design. Despite it’s production model underpinnings, the Concept-S is bigger in every dimensions, with a 20mm increase in height, 40mm extra in width, and almost 100mm added to its length. Wheelbase remains the same at 2670mm.

The front end design enhances the Three-Diamond badge with bold chrome accent mouldings on either side creating a three dimensional effect and suggestion of motion. The exterior is painted in a brilliant “Platinum White” with glass flake finish.

Inside, the Concept-S sports a more upmarket interior, with black and burgundy colour scheme and fine detailing including black woodgrain trim with silver accent, centre console design inspired by Japanese traditional black lacquered boxes and soft leather, hand-stitched by selected craftsmen.

The seat upholstery forms a three-dimensional surface with horizontally-ribbed cushioning, while trim lines follow the body contours. Silver accents that curve around the seat further enhance the quality feel of the interior.

Mitsubishi has confirmed the Outlander PHEV Concept-S will sit alongside another concept – the XR-PHEV, a racing version of the Outlander PHEV and seven other production models.

The 2014 Paris Motor Show will throw open its doors from the 4 – 19 October.
