Mercedes-AMG reportedly working on less potent A40 AMG

Mercedes-AMG is reportedly working on a less potent hot hatch to slot below the full-fat A45 AMG when the next-generation A-Class arrives.

The mid-level hatch – likely to be christened A40 AMG – is expected to go head-to-head with the popular Audi S3 in the premium hot hatch segment.

Not much detail is available at this stage except it will ride on the MFA2 platform. But to compete with the S3, the new model would need to have an output of around 254kW or more. All-wheel-drive would also likely to be standard.

In terms of styling, unlike the overtly sporty A45, the A40 will have a slightly toned down body kit, much like the C43 AMG is to the C63 AMG. According to reports, heavily camouflage prototypes have been spotted with larger air intakes and a high-performance braking system with drilled rotors and larger calipers.
