Mazda Takeri Concept Previews 2013 Mazda 6 Saloon

Mazda’s new product onslaught continues with the Japanese company set to reveal the next-generation Mazda 6 saloon concept at next month’s Tokyo Motor Show based on this new Takeri Concept.

The next-generation Mazda 6 is set to appear in showrooms around the world in 2013. It will come with a full suite of Mazda’s ‘Sky Activ’ technology. This includes highly efficient petrol and diesel engines, as well as new lightweight automatic and manual transmissions. The new technology also extends to suspension systems and a new modular steel platform.

According to Mazda, these technologies are to future-proof the company from stringent emissions regulations in the future. It also prepares the company to survive as an independent car maker after its split from Ford.

The Mazda 6 will be the second production model to benefit from the Sky Activ platform, after the CX-5 which is set to go on sale in 2012. This steel space frame platform is made in small sections which can be easily scaled up or down to underpin a range of vehicles, from a Mazda 3 to a full size CX-9 SUV.

The Takeri Concept continues Mazda’s new design language called Kodo – Soul of Motion. First seen on the stunning Shinari Concept, the new Mazda 6 will sport a classier front, with distinctive grille treatment and technical headlights. The coupé like profile is enhanced by crisper lines for a sporty yet elegant silhouette.

The interior of the concept is equally futuristic with a minimalist premium look and feel. The dash board is driver oriented with controls tilting slightly towards the driver. A BMW I-Drive style rotary controller has also been adopted in place of traditional buttons.

The Takeri Concept is powered by a Sky Activ 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine producing 173bhp. It emits just 104g/km of icecap friendly CO2, thanks to the engine’s lightweight, low friction design. It also has the lowest compression ratio of any production diesel engine. Together with stop-start technology and regenerative braking systems, the diesel power plant is one of the most fuel efficient today. The engine is mated to a new Sky Activ torque convertor automatic gearbox, said to offer economy similar to that of a manual.
