Jaguar trademarks Q-Type and XQ names – SUV underway

We already know that Jaguar is working on an SUV to compete in the increasingly popular segment. Now, the company has reportedly registered the Q-Type and XQ names on the European Union trademark database.

With new owners, Tata, keen on expanding the British marque’s market share, it comes as no surprise that an SUV is on the cards. Besides, Jaguar could also readily draw on sister company, Land Rover’s expertise. Chances are it will borrow the Range Rover Evoque’s platform, or a shortened version of the architecture, if Jaguar decides on a smaller SUV.

The Chinese market, where increasing affluent buyers have an insatiable appetite for SUVs, will play an influential role on deciding whether the project gets green-lighted. China is already set to overtake the United Kingdom as Jaguar’s biggest market, after overtaking the United States in the first quarter of the year.

If the Q-Type / XQ hits production, it will share a range of engines within the Jaguar Land Rover group, including the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines currently found under the bonnet of the XF. More powerful V6 variants as well as hybrids, are also on the cards.
