DC Avanti – India’s First Sports Car

The automotive industry has come a long way since Ford brought us the Model T. Over the last century, more and more countries have joined the car manufacturing club. More recently, we see the rise of China with numerous chinese automotive brands and now India isn’t going to be left behind.

Meet the first Indian designed sports car – the DC Avanti, revealed at the Delhi Motor Show. This could be India’s answer to the mouth wateringly delicious Toyota GT-86!

Although sounding suspiciously Italian, the mid-mounted sports car was designed in India and I have to say it isn’t a bad first effort. The design is sufficiently original and not a rip off of various designs like those coming out of China. It has the classic sports car proportion, with its long front overhangs and side panels, complete with engine cooling vents.

The 1560kg Avanti is powered by a Ford 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, producing a claimed 261bhp (195kW). A V6 version with 394bhp (294kW) will join the line-up at later date. Both engines are mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The Pune based maker claims the base model will hit 100km/h (62mph) in under 7 seconds.

DC Design has a production target of 200 cars a year initially, but plans to build up to 2000 cars a year in the long term. The car will be sold through dedicated Avanti showrooms in India.
