The DS brand is Citroen’s answer to luxury and style. Created in 2009 as a premium brand for the mass market double Chevron marque, the DS’ objective is not only to redirect customers with fat wallets from Mercedes and BMW, it also marks the reincarnation of the DS line.

First unveiled at a special press launch event in Paris late last year, the Citroen DS 5LS is a bold, striking luxury sedan built for the Chinese market that went on sale last March.

For the upcoming Beijing motor show, the French marque will be unveiling a performance focused version of the premium sedan, the DS 5LS R concept.

A nod to Citroën’s World Rally Championship pedigree, DS 5LS R is underpinned by a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine that develops 224 kW (300bhp) of power and 400 Nm of torque. The mill is paired with a sequential gearbox, controlled by paddles behind the steering wheel.

The hot version sits 15mm closer to the ground, compared to the production version. It also gets wider front tracks, reinforced chassis, uprated brakes and sports suspension. There is extensive use of carbon fibre components.

The sports styling is emphasised by an anodised Carmine Red paint job with a matte metallic finish. The concept confirms its ‘R’ status with wide side stripes in matt carbon grey on the front doors and a matching set of carbon-coloured 20-inch wheels.

Inside, leather and Alcantara® highlight the DS 5LS R’s luxurious cabin, complemented by carbon fibre inserts on the steering wheel, door panels and door handles.

The Beijing Motor Show takes place at the China International Exhibition Centre from April 20-29.
