Chevrolet Camaro’s Airbag Deployed Without A Crash During Drifting!

Airbags are modern life saving devices that are essential in today’s cars. They are designed to deploy and absorb the impact of a crash that is over a certain predefined threshold. That means that an airbag in theory should not deploy at minor crashes. Less so, when there is no crash at all!

This, however doesn’t seem to be the case with the curtain airbag of this latest generation Chevrolet Camaro. The airbag deployed without an accident while the driver, Paul Beiswenger was drifting the car at the Milan Dragway in Michigan. While no injury was sustained by the driver, the co-driver suffered some burns on her right arm caused by the deploying airbag on her side.

At this stage, we do not wish to speculate as to why the airbags had inflated for no reason, but according to a member of the Camaro5 forums, a similar incident involving a new Camaro happened in Quebec, Canada last year.

In that incident, Sympatic Autos Teams editor, Antoine Joubert was at the wheels of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS when the side airbags deployed for no reason at all.

“I was at the wheel of the Camaro at a speed of 130-140 km/h on the oval track at Sanair when suddenly, for no apparent reason, the side curtain airbags deployed!” said, Antoine Joubert. “I was driving in a straight line, at a constant speed, on the pavement. The electronic stability control wasn’t disabled and the car had no mechanical problems.”
