It is no secret that BMW is developing a 4 Series Gran Coupe, as we’ve recently caught them testing prototypes of the car. This is now confirmed with recently published patent images of the car sourced from China.

Set to go on sale sometime in 2014, the four-door coupé is the Bavarian’s answer to the Audi A5 Sportsback. Like the 4 Series, the 4 Series Gran Coupe is based on the 3 Series sedan and rides on a longer wheelbase than either model.

As for its engine lineup, it will closely mirror that of the 4 Series, meaning a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder in both the 420i and 428i and 3.0-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder 435i. A 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder is also expected in the 420d.
