Best Concepts from Frankfurt 2011: the Future of Motoring

What is the future of motoring? It is about stylish design approaches, new concepts of mobility and alternative propulsion technologies. Manufacturers have taken the opportunity to showcase their latest ideas at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Here we show you the best studies from Frankfurt.

Alfa Romeo 4C Concept

The 4c Concept was first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011. It features a 200 horsepower engine, enough to propel the 850 kg coupe from zero to 100 km/h in less than five seconds. It remains a concept for now but Alfa has hint that the 4C Concept may go into production in 2013.

BMW i3 Concept

BMW is so serious about electric propulsion it has created a whole sub-brand called “i” for its range of electric vehicles. The 3.84 meter long i3 Concept is a small electric car designed as a city run-about. BMW plans to put the i3 into production in 2013.

BMW i8 Concept

The BMW i8 Concept shows that eco-friendly cars can be fun too. The 4.63 meter long 2+2 coupe is a plug-in hybrid. Power comes from a 223 horsepower three cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine and an electric motor with 131 horsepower. The i8 Concept can sprint from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 250 km/h! All these with an average fuel consumption of just 2.7l/100km. Impressive!

Brabus Rocket 800

Fortunately, a high-powered gasoline monster still exists today despite all the eco-friendly focused concepts. Mercedes tuner Brabus showcases this 800 horsepower, 1420 Nm Mercedes CLS. This V12 twin turbo four-door coupe can accelerate from zero to 300 km/h in just 24 seconds. Top speed is 370 km/h.

Cadillac Ciel

The Cadillac Ciel once again embraces the edgy retro design of the classic Ciel-models of Cadillac from the 1970s. The doors of the concept open in opposite directions. Under the long hood, is a turbocharged 3.6-liter gasoline engine with 425 horsepower. Supporting the six-cylinder is an electric motor that draws its power from lithium-ion batteries. At slow speed, the Ciel runs solely on electric power.

Chevrolet Miray

The fighter jet inspired Chevrolet Miray is powered by two 15 kW electric motors driving the front wheels and a 1.5 liter turbocharged four cylinder engine driving the rear wheels. At low speed the Miray relies solely on electric propulsion at the front axle.
