All-new larger, more premium Hyundai Sonata unveiled

2014 Hyundai Sonata

Hyundai has unveiled its all-new Sonata in Korea. The new car is 35mm longer and 30mm wider than the outgoing model and comes laden with premium technologies first introduced in the all-new Genesis sedan.

Sporting an evolutionary styling, the mid-size sedan showcases a sleek and premium exterior. According to Hyundai, the Sonata’s design concept focuses on ‘Inner Force’, a theme that points to its evolved aesthetic and confident design.

The company said the new model has 41 per cent greater torsional strength and 35 per cent bigger bending strength. During development, the prototypes were tested in several locations across the globe, including the Australian Outback, the Nürburgring in Germany and the Mojave Proving Ground in California.

The car measures 4,855mm long, 1,865mm wide and 1,475mm tall, with a 2,805mm wheelbase and 462-litre boot space. It is suspended on MacPherson strut suspension at the front and a multi-link rear setup. It rides on a variety of 16 to 18-inch alloy wheels.

The Korean version (KDM-spec) will be sold with a 2.0 CVVL engine delivering 125kW (168 HP) & 201 Nm, a 2.4 GDi with 144kW (193 HP) & 247 Nm and a 2.0 LPi rated at 113kW (151 HP) & 194 Nm. These engines direct their power to the front wheels through either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic gearbox.

The car is fitted with active safety features such as Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning System, Advance Smart Cruise Control and bi-xenon headlights with High Beam Assist and LED daytime running lights. A variety of other equipment includes rear parking sensors, heated leather seats, advanced multimedia systems and next-generation infotainment equipment are also fitted to the all-new Sonata.

The new Hyundai Sonata will be introduced outside of Korea at the New York International Auto Show in April. It will make its Australian debut in the second half of 2014.
