Peugeot Australia has announced the pricing and specification of the all-new 308 range, which is set to hit Australian showrooms from the 26 October.

It is the first Peugeot to be built on the Efficient Modular Platform 2 (EMP2) that weighs up to 140kg less than its predecessor. Measuring 4.25m in length, the new 308 is the most compact hatchback of the segment.

There are two body styles to choose from – the hatch or Touring wagon, and five model grades – Access, Active, Allure, Allure Premium and GT. The range is powered by three different engine options with six different engine outputs.

Like Europe, the 308 will be launched in two phases. At launch, the 308 will be available with the 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol and 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engines.

The 2nd Phase, due in March 2015, will see the 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol and higher output 2.0-litre turbo diesels added to the range.

The 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol is shared with the smaller 208 and produces 96kW of power and 230Nm of torque. It is found under the bonnet of the Access, Active and Allure.

Meanwhile, the 2.0-litre BlueHDI turbo diesel generates 110kW of power and 370Nm of torque and will propel the Allure.

A 6-speed manual is available only on the base Access hatch priced at $21,990 and top of the range GT petrol (price TBA). A 6-speed automatic is available for an extra $2,000.

Next up is the Active hatch, which is priced at $27,340. The Allure hatch with the 1.2-litre engine and automatic transmission is priced at $30,490, and an extra $4,300 if the 2.0-litre BlueHDI automatic (only transmission) is specified. Buyers choosing the Touring Allure with the same power and drivetrain will need at additional $2,700 over the hatch at $37,490.

According to Peugeot, combined fuel consumption is between 4.6 to 4.9 litres per 100km for the petrol-powered variants, and 4.1 litres per 100km for the diesel.

From March 2015, the 1.6-litre 110kW turbo petrol Allure hatch and Touring will join the range, both married to a 6-speed automatic transmission, along with a pair of performance-oriented GT models.

The GTs can be had with either a 151kW/285Nm 1.6-litre turbo petrol paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, or a 133kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbo diesel mated with a 6-speed automatic.

Peugeot aims to push the 308 upmarket, especially with higher end variants. They are equipped with first-in-class full LED headlights (lower specs models gets halogen headlamps), DRLs and taillights. Each headlight features 31 LEDs, while the taillights take up the theme of the three Peugeot lion claws.

2014 Peugeot 308 touchscreen infotainment

Inside, the completely revamped interior follows the 208’s lead with a minimalist execution. There are soft-touch materials on the dash and doors and Peugeot has even gone to the extend of improving the door mechanism so that they shut with a solid ‘thud’.

The 308 features a head-up instrument panel behind the more compact steering wheel, a 9.7-inch touchscreen and an elevated centre console. The touchscreen controls everything from air-conditioning to satellite navigation and driving aids. It is standard on all but the entry-level Access.

There are also a range of electronic driving aids – standard on the Allure Premium, including blind-spot monitoring, park assist, dynamic cruise control, emergency collision warning and emergency collision braking.

All variants get electric park brake, hand-free entry, push-button start and reversing camera.
