2014 Lexus IS Illustration: Could This be The Next Lexus IS?

Since its debut, the current Lexus IS has always been regarded as a serious contender for the sport compact executive segment long dominated by the Germans. The replacement model will not see the light of day until at least 2014.

However, Best Car magazine has come up with a photo illustration of what the next generation Lexus IS could look like. According to certain sources, work has already begun on a new IS that is based on the FT-86 platform. For those unaware, the FT-86 is a concept first made appearance at the 2009 Tokyo Auto Show. It is a lightweight rear-wheel-drive sports coupe designed to be the spiritual successor to the iconic Toyota Levin AE-86 made famous by the Japanese comic and animation series Initial D.

The next IS is said to be built atop a stretched version of the FT-86 chassis. Three engine options will be available: a 2.5 litre 4-cylinder for the base model, a 3.6 litre flat 6 for the top of the range IS, and a 5.0 litre v8 muscle for the flagship IS-F.

How true are these speculations? We will have to wait and find out.
